ASHIKAGA SHOGUNATE: Also known as the
Muromachi Period, the Ashikaga Shogunate
was founded by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji
of the Minamoto clan in the mid-fourteenth
century. Because he established his capital in
Muromachi, near present-day TOKYO, the
period is also called the Muromachi Period.
During this period JAPAN suffered from
endemic warfare between rival factions and
shoguns. The dynasty was eventually
overthrown by ODA NOBUNAGA, a feudal baron
from central JAPAN. Because of the constant
state of warfare in Ashikaga JAPAN, martial
arts, especially JUJUTSU, KENJUTSU, and
NINJUTSU, developed rapidly for use in
practical fighting situations. (See also Japan article)
