  1. ASHIKAGA SHOGUNATE: Also known as the 
  2. Muromachi Period, the Ashikaga Shogunate 
  3. was founded by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji 
  4. of the Minamoto clan in the mid-fourteenth 
  5. century. Because he established his capital in 
  6. Muromachi, near present-day TOKYO, the 
  7. period is also called the Muromachi Period. 
  8.     During this period JAPAN suffered from 
  9. endemic warfare between rival factions and 
  10. shoguns. The dynasty was eventually 
  11. overthrown by ODA NOBUNAGA, a feudal baron 
  12. from central JAPAN. Because of the constant 
  13. state of warfare in Ashikaga JAPAN, martial 
  14. arts, especially JUJUTSU, KENJUTSU, and 
  15. NINJUTSU, developed rapidly for use in 
  16. practical fighting situations. (See also Japan article)
